Aru even regularly hid a stash of candy in the mouth of the four-hundred-year old sea dragon whom she had named Steve. Often, she used to fall asleep in the theater and wake up just before crackling self-guided tour announced that India became free from the British rule in 1947. She used to do her homework under the giant stone elephant at the entrance, whom she would later name Greg. Growing up, the museum never kept any secrets from her. However, as a tribute to him, Aru's mother always read that book to her when she was little.Īru Shah was raised in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture in Atlanta, Georgia, and had lived there for as long as she could remember. The book avoids jargon and acronyms, providing a plain language, straightforward discussion of 80 possible solutions under the headings of Energy, Food, Women and Girls, Buildings and Cities, Land Use, Transport, and Materials. Hence the name “Drawdown”, something they say we need to embrace if we are to successfully prevent catastrophic impacts of climate change. Drawdown is part of an emerging conversation that clearly identifies viable solutions while also asking difficult questions about finding our moral compass: What future do we want for humanity? How can wealth be shared more equitably? and How do we create a livable planet for humans and all biodiversity? The book is a compilation of credible, science-based solutions intended to halt and, more importantly, re verse human caused greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Climate change is a complex, multi-scale issue that needs to be discussed in the context of its social, ethical, environmental, economic and political drivers, impacts, and solutions. It feels like I’ve been looking for too much brain candy lately, because I don’t want to focus on the substance but I’ll get to it! I’m thinking of checking out The Young Elites later, so that’ll be coming soon. I’ve been extremely busy (school, yikes) so it’s been hard to update and even read. I’m sorry for not posting lately, whoever is reading this. This is the story of eight girls, freshman to senior, “pretty” and “ugly.” And it’s also the story of how we see ourselves, and how other people see us, and the tangled connection of the two. The damage is done the minute it goes up. A list is posted, and one girl from each grade is chosen as the prettiest, and another is chosen as the ugliest. An intense look at the rules of high school attraction – and the price that’s paid for them. Pride and Prejudice is the perfect novel to begin with because it’s so accessible, and the hilarity comes across clearly even to modern readers. And if you can’t recognize the humor, you miss out. I think the biggest pitfall when beginning Austen (especially if you’re not in the habit of reading classics with more antiquated style and language) is to miss the HUMOR. That’s not to say that there aren’t serious themes in the first three I listed, but the last three have a very different feel. The last three novels I listed are Austen’s more melancholy works and I think they’re best appreciated after tackling her more light-hearted novels. So at the risk of sounding terribly bossy here’s the right way–okay, okay! A good way–to start off your love affair with Jane Austen’s brilliant works: While I’m of the opinion that you really can’t go wrong choosing a first Austen because all six novels are splendid, I do think there’s an ideal order for most new readers to discover Austen’s novels. “ I’ve never read Jane Austen! Which one should I start with?” As an obsessed Janeite, this is definitely one of the most frequently asked questions I get. Trying to catch even one small movement, Libby peered into the night. All during that March day in 1857 it had rained, and a large puddle lay between the tall building and the steamboat. This time they slipped into the deep shadows next to the warehouse. As silently as they came, the men crept around the building and disappeared.Ī few minutes later the three men returned.
